Warp yarn inputs

Warp yarn depends on the width in the reed, sett, number of ends, woven length, take-up, shrinkage, sampling, fringe, and loom waste. The highest-risk beginner mistake is forgetting loom waste or multiplying by finished length instead of the full warp length.

Weft yarn inputs

Weft yarn depends on width, woven length, picks per inch, and weft take-up. Weft estimates are less exact than warp estimates because beat, shuttle angle, structure, and selvedges can change yarn use.

For balanced cloth, PPI often starts near EPI. For weft-faced cloth, PPI is usually higher. For warp-faced cloth, PPI is usually lower.

Warp and weft FAQ

Is warp yardage more predictable than weft yardage?

Usually yes. Warp yardage is mostly ends times warp length. Weft yardage changes more with beat, structure, and weaving habits.

Should I combine warp and weft totals?

Only combine them when the same yarn is used for both. If warp and weft yarns differ, keep package counts separate.
